Food Waste to energy: A sustainable solution?

In recent years, there has been growing interest in converting food waste to energy as a green measure to address climate change around the world. In Hong Kong, around 1.2 million tons of food waste was landfilled every year, EPD of HKSAR Government has planned several Organic Waste Treatment Facilities in Hong Kong to turn food waste into useful compost and biogas using emerging technologies for energy recovery and reduction of the burden on landfills. To evaluate its sustainability and applicability in the context of Hong Kong, the current status and new trends of the food waste to energy across the globe are reviewed and compared with the proposed food waste strategies in Hong Kong. The unique challenges and opportunities arising from this innovative food waste management strategy in Hong Kong are also presented.
