2nd Keynote speech: Post-Paris Agreement - UK perspective and the role of science and technology
Collective action is needed now to tackle climate change and to meet the long-temperature goal of the Paris Agreement. The UK recognises this and is firmly committed to building national and global understanding of the challenges we face: supporting research and developing solutions. This is includes ensuring we have the robust scientific advice on climate variability and climate change that is necessary to inform policy on mitigation and adaptation. The role of the IPCC is key in informing the international community and the UK is proud of the contribution it makes in both funding and expertise.
Domestically, the UK Climate Change Act (2008) is one of the most ambitious targets in the world. Nevertheless, this transition to a low carbon economy presents opportunities for UK businesses – domestic and international. Together, businesses and government can, and should, enhance the exploitation of these global market opportunities.
